Katalox Light Water Filtration Media – 28L
Katalox Light is an advanced catalytic water filtration media designed for the effective removal of iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide, while also providing excellent filtration of suspended solids, sediment and turbidity. Manufactured in Germany by Watch Water, the media is based on ZEOSORB® and features a high-content manganese dioxide (MnO₂) coating that provides strong catalytic filtration performance.
The unique structure of Katalox Light provides a very large filtration surface while maintaining a relatively low bulk density. It is capable of filtering particles down to less than 3 microns and can help improve water clarity, colour and odour. The media can also assist in the reduction of arsenic, heavy metals and certain radionuclides under appropriate treatment conditions.
Katalox Light combines several treatment mechanisms within a single media bed, including mechanical filtration, catalytic precipitation and sorption. This makes it particularly suitable for well and borehole water where iron, manganese, hydrogen sulphide, sediment and turbidity may occur together.
One of the key advantages of Katalox Light is its high manganese dioxide content. The media contains approximately 10% MnO₂ and is based on approximately 85% ZEOSORB®. According to the manufacturer, it contains no crystalline silica and does not require mandatory chemical dosing for normal operation. Its lightweight structure also helps reduce the amount of water required during backwashing compared with heavier conventional catalytic media.
Katalox Light is suitable for residential, commercial and industrial water treatment systems and can also be used as a pre-treatment media for reverse osmosis systems. With correct system design and operating conditions, the manufacturer indicates a typical replacement interval of approximately 7–10 years.

Removal Performance
Katalox Light is designed for demanding water treatment applications. Watch Water specifies filtration and removal capacities including approximately 3000 mg/L for Fe²⁺ alone, 1500 mg/L for Mn²⁺ alone and 500 mg/L for H₂S alone under the manufacturer's stated test conditions. The manufacturer also reports applications involving inlet iron concentrations of up to 100 mg/L and manganese concentrations of up to 20 mg/L, although actual performance depends on water chemistry, pH, flow rate and system design.
For iron removal, the manufacturer's system calculator is based on a recommended inlet pH of 7.5, while manganese removal is based on pH 8.5. Where raw-water pH is below the recommended level, appropriate pH correction may be required.
